Let his mother age be y
x+y=45 (solve for y)
y=45-x (subsitution)

In 5 years scott's age = x+5
his mother's age = y+5

3(x+5)-9=y+5
3x+15-9=y+5
3x+6=y+5 (allow subsitution)
3x+6=45-x+5
4x=50-6
4x=44
x=11

y=45-11
y=34

Hence, Scott's age is 11, and his mother's age is 34.
