William's age in 2000 is x so John age in 2000 is 11x
In 2012, Williams is x + 12, John is 11x + 12
We are told 3(x + 12) = 11x + 12
3x + 36 = 11x + 12
8x = 24
x = 3
In 2000 ages were 3 and 33
In 2012 ages will be 15 and 45 (which is 3 times)

in year 2000 John's age was 11x
After 12 years 11x+12 = 3(x+12)
11x+12 = 3x +36
11x-3x=36-12
