let my brother's age be x
my age will then be 3x
our age difference is 4 [as per the question]
so 3x-x=4
2x=4
x=2
equating this we get ,
my age is 6 and my brother's is 2.

:
8 + x = 3(4 + x)
8 + x = 12 + 3x
8 - 12 = 3x - x
-4 = 2x
x =
x = -2 yrs, negative mean it happened in the past, 2 years ago

Check this, 2 yrs ago you were 6, and 2 yrs ago brother was 2
At that time you were 3 times his age
