We need to give variables unknowns.

we are moving forward some number of years which we don't know.
Let x = the number of years from now. We get

notice we are adding some number of years to your age and also to the younger persons age.
At some point in the future, your future age will be 3 times the future age of the younger person.
distribute the 3 to the (6 + x) to get

Now, we have an equation that we can solve. subtract x from both sides to get

WE have isolated the variable. Now isolate the number. subtract 18 from both sides to get

divide by 2 on both sides to get

in 13 years you will be 3 times the younger.
In 13 years you will be
44 + 13 = 57
and
the younger person will be
6 + 13 = 19.
Now 57/19 = 3.

Since the question wants the number of years it will take for you to be 3 times the age of the younger person, we have "13 years".
