the mother is getting younger.
now she is 40 times in 5 years she will be only three times as old as her daughter
(40+x)=3(10+x)
40+x=30+3x
10=2x
5=x
How long before she is only twice as old?
same equation but with a 2 instead of 3
(40+x)=2(10+x)
40+x=20+2x
20=x
mom will be 60 and daughter will be 30
I joke with my kids that someday we will be the same age.

Let x be the number of years when the mother's age will be 3 times the daughters.
Then:
40 + x = (10 + x) * 3
40 + x = 30 + 3x
2x = 10
