Step 1. Let x be Tom's age and let 3x+8 be Charles' age.

Step 2. When Charles's age is subtracted from Tom's age, the number obtained is Tom's age 14 years ago. We have Charles' age - Tom's Age = 14 or

With x=3, then 3x+8=9+8=17. Note the difference is 17-3=14 which is a true statement based on the problem statement.

Step 3. ANSWER. Tom is 3 years old and Charles is 17 years old.
