Let t=age of Tim (his current age) and j=age of JoAnn (her current age)
This means that t+6 is Tim's age 6 years from now and j+6 is JoAnn's age 6 years from now.
"Tim is 5 years older than JoAnn" translates to
"Six years from now the sume of their ages will be 79" translates to
Start with the second equation.
Remove the parenthesis.
Combine like terms.
Subtract 12 from both sides.
Combine like terms.
Plug in
Subtract 5 from both sides.
Combine like terms.
Divide both sides by 2.
Reduce.
So this means that JoAnn is 31 years old (right now).
