Let L=Lina's present age and a=anita's
L=a/3
L-6=(a-6)/9
(a/3)-6=(a-6)/9 substitute a/3 for L.
(9a/3)-54=a-6 Multiply each side by 9 (LCM) to eliminate fractions.
3a-54=a-6
2a=48
a=24
L=8

Lina's present age = x/3
Anita's present age = x
Lina's age 6 years ago = (x/3) - 6
Then (x/3) - 6 = (x/9)....This equation came from the words "Six years ago, she was 1\9 as old as Anita."
(x/3) - 6 = (x/9)....We now mutiply both sides of the equation by 9 to remove the fractions.
Afterward, we get this:
3x - 54 = x
3x - x = 54
2x = 54
x = 27
Anita is 27 years old. Lina is 1/3 times 27 or 9 years old.
