thrice is three. lets call Joey's age j and his sons's age s
:
Joey(j)is(=)thrice(3 times)as old as son(s)--->j=3s
:
sum of Joey(j)+son(s)=60---->j+s=60
:
j=3(s)....eq 1
j+s=60....eq 2
:
take j's value from eq 1 and plug it into eq 2
:(3s)+s=60
:
4s=60.....combining terms
:
sons age.....(divided both sides by 4 to isolate s
:
joey's age
