Question 172342: Jonah is one more than twice as old as Joelle and five more than than half as old as Aziza. In six years, their ages will add up to sixty. How old is each person?
I have tried various ways of doing this.
x(2X+1)(X/2+5)+6=60 for example, please help.

Answer by Mathtut(3670)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first lets label each person with a variable...lets call Jonah h Joelle e and aziza a
:
h=2e+1....eq 1----->e=(h-1)/2...revised eq 1
h=1/2a+5..eq 2----->a=2h-10.....revised eq 2
(h+6)+(e+6)+(a+6)=60...eq 3----->h+e+a=42.....revised eq 3
:
now take values from revised eq 1 and 2 and plug them into revised eq 3
:
h+(h-1)/2+2h-10=42.....multiply all terms by 2
:
2h+h-1+4h-20=84......combine terms
:
7h=105
:
Jonah's age
:
Joelle's age
:
aziza's age
