ok lets call the statues age s and the monuments age m
:
s=50
m=40
lets call the unknown amount of years x
:
s+x=3(m+x)
:
50+x=3(40+x)
:
50+x=120+3x
:
2x=-70
:
so 35 years ago s was 3 times m's age...
this question should have been stated how many years ago was statute 3 times the age of the monument

a statue in the city's public garden is 50 years old. in the same garden is a monument which is 40 years old. in how many years will the statue be three-times as old as the monument?
--------------------------------
Let's say that will happen in x years.
The statue will be 50+x years old
The monument will be 40+x years old
--------------------
EQUATION:
statue = 3*monument
50+x = 3(40+x)
50+x = 120 + 3x
2x = -70
x = -35 years
---------------------
The statue was 3 times as old as the monument was when the
statue was 15 years old and the monument was 5 years old.
