Let a = A's age, let j = J's age
;
Write an equation for each statement:
"Annilee's present age is two-thirds of jessie's present age.
a = j
:
" in 12 years the sum of their ages will be 54 years."
(a+12) + (j+12) = 54
a + j + 24 = 54
a + j = 54 - 24
a + j = 30
:
Find their present ages.
:
Substitute j for a in the above equation
j + j = 30
j = 30
multiply equation by 3
5j = 90
j =
j = 18 yrs old now
and
a = 18
a = 12 yrs old now
;
:
Check solution in the statement:
"in 12 years the sum of their ages will be 54 years."
(18+12) + (12+12) = 54
