Let the present age of dot be x years
and the present age of cousin be y years
sum of their ages=24
x+y=24
x=24-y .......(1)
three years ago
age of dot=(x-3)years
age of cousine=(y-3)
now according to the condition we have
(x-3)=2(y-3)
substituting the value of x from equation (i) we have
24-y-3=2y-6
21-y=2y-6
21-y-21=2y-6-21
-y-2y=2y-15-2y
-3y=-15
=
y=5
substituting the value of y in equation (i) we have
x=24-y
x=24-5
x=19
dot present age=19 years
cousin present age=5 years
