IN X YEARS MARY=12+X & JOEY=2+X.
(12+X)=2(2+X)
12+X=4+2X
X-2X=4-12
-X=-8
X=8 SO IN 8 YEARS MARY WILL BE TWICE AS OLD AS JOEY.
PROOF
12+8=2(2+8)
20=2*10
20=20
OR MARY WILL BE 20 & JOEY WILL BE 10.
