elijah and kylie have a combined age of 31.
e + k =31
elijah is 4 years older twice Kylie's age.
e = 2k+4
in the first equation, replace e with (2k+4)
(2k+4) + k = 31
3k = 31 - 4
k = 27/3
k = 9 yr old is Kylie' age
find E's age
e = 2(9) + 4
e = 18 + 4
e = 22 yrs is Elijah's age

Let Kylie's age be x years
elijah is 4 years older than twice Kylie's age.
Elijah's age will be 2x+4
elijah and kylie have a combined age of 31
x+2x+4 = 31
3x+4=31
3x=27
x=9

Kylie's age is 9 years
Elijah's age = 2x+4 = 2(9)+4 = 22 years substitute x=9
