4b = his mom's age
b*4b = product of their ages = 4b^2
4b^2 = 400
b^2 = 400/4
b^2 = 100
b = sqrt(100)
b = 10
Bob is 10 years old and his mother is 40

in English, because it is AMBIGUOUS.
