(2) Divide that by 5 to find Jimmy's age 7 years ago.

            Equations in the post by @josgarithmetic are incorrect and will lead you to NOWHERE.

            I came to bring a correct solution.

Write equation as you read the problem 42 - 7 = 5*(j-7). Simplify and find j, Jimmy's age now 35 = 5*(j-7) 7 = j-7 14 = j ANSWER. Jimmy is 14 years old.
