Here is a different way of setting up the problem for solving....

We are told that Corazon was 5 times as old as Carl 4 years ago. So let their ages 4 years ago be 5x and x.

The difference between their ages is 5x-x=4x; but the difference in their ages (then, and always) is 48 years, so

4x=48
x=12

Their ages 4 years ago were x=12 and 5x=60.
