In this post, I show an Algebra solution.
Let x be the age of Lee.
Then the age of Sam is (50-x) years.
In 5 years they will be (x+5) years old (Lee) and (50-x+5) = (55-x) years old (Sam).
According to the condition,
4*(x+5) = 55 - x.
Simplify and find x
4x + 20 = 55 - x
4x + x = 55 - 20
5x = 35
x = 35/5 = 7.
ANSWER. Lee is 7 years old now; Sam is 50-7 = 43 years old now,.

The meaning is that Lee's age is 50 and Sam's age is 50. If you really intend to say the SUM of their ages is 50, then you need to say this unmistakably.
