The given information is faulty.

In age problems, it has to be assumed that all ages are whole numbers.

If Kim is 12 years older than Sue, then either Sue's age is an even number and Kim's is also, or Sue's age is an odd number and Kim's is also. But the sum of two even numbers is even, and the sum of two odd numbers is also even; so the sum of their two ages can't be 27.
