.
A man is 12 times as old as his son. In 9 years time, he will be only 3 times as old as his son.
How old are each?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let x be the son's age;
then the father's age is 12x.
In 9 years
3*(x+9) = 12x + 9.
Simplify and solve
3x + 27 = 12x + 9.
27 - 9 = 12x - 3x
18 = 9x
x = 18/9 = 2 years old.
ANSWER. The son is 2 years old; the father is 12*2 = 24 years old.
Solved.
