I don't think this will have an integer solution, anyway here is a method
:
Maria is 4 times older than her son.
m = 4s
After 3 years the sum of their ages will be 38.
(m+3) + (s+3) = 38
m + s + 6 = 38
m + s = 38 - 6
m + s = 32
calculate their presents ages.
replace m with 4s
4s + s = 32
5s = 32
s = 32/5
s = 6.4 yrs old is the son
then
m = 4(6.4) = 25.6 yrs is Maria
