Jenna’s mother is 3 times as old as Jenna. In 3 years, the sum of their ages will be 62.



(a)  If Jenna’s current age is represented by x, write an expression to represent the current age of Jenna’s mother.

(b)  Write an expression to represent Jenna’s age in 3 years.

     Jenna’s age in 3 years is  (x+3) years.



(c)  Write an expression to represent Jenna’s mother’s age in 3 years.

     Jenna’s mother’s age in 3 years is  (3x+3) years.



(d)  Determine Jenna’s current age.

     Based on give conditions, we write the equation for total ages

           (x+3) + (3x+3) = 62.


     Then we simplify it and find x

            4x + 6 = 62

            4x     = 62 - 6

            4x     = 56

             x     = 56/4 = 14.


ANSWER.  Jenna is 14 years old.
