Here is a non-traditional approach to this kind of problem that I like to use because (for me at least) the amount of work to reach the answer is less.

The difference between their ages is 14 years.
When Roda was 3 times as old as Rica, their ages could be represented by 3x and x.
The difference between 3x and x is 2x.
Since the difference between their ages is 14, we have 2x=14 and x=7.
Therefore, when Roda was 3 times as old as Rica, their ages were x=7 and 3x=21.
Since that was 3 years ago, their ages now are 10 and 24.

ANSWERS: Roda is 24; Rica is 10.
