M = Max


(M-3) = Christine


3*(M-3) = Angel


    M + (M-3) + 3*(M-3) = 28     (total age)


    M + M - 3 + 3M - 9 = 28

    5M - 12 = 28

    5M      = 28 + 12

    5M      = 40

     M      = 40/5 = 8.


ANSWER.  Max is 8 years old.
