Carol is x
Lori is x+15
in 10 years they will be x+10 and x+25
so 2(x+10)=x+25
2x+20=x+25
x=5
Carol is 5
Lori is 20 ANSWER
in 10 years, they will be 15 and 30 respectively.

Let Lori's age be L
Then Carol's is: L - 15
We then get: L + 10 = 2(L - 15 + 10)
L + 10 = 2(L - 5)
L + 10 = 2L - 10
10 + 10 = 2L - L
Lori, or

Solving a problem like this using formal algebra is good practice with formal mathematics. You have responses showing two different algebraic solutions.

If a formal solution is not required, you can get to the answer faster using logical reasoning and simple arithmetic.

The difference in their ages is 15 years.
So when Lori is twice as old as Carol, their ages will be 15 and 30.
Since that will be 10 years from now, their current ages are 5 and 20.
