Question 1159209: Hello,
I tried to solve this question for two days in a row and I get the wrong answer.I will be really happy if you could send me the right solution.The question is:

Thank you in advance!

They're right. I was wrong. It's a dependent system, not an inconsistent
system. It has many solutions. I didn't actually solve it. I noticed the variables had the same coefficients, did it in my head and missed a sign! Sorry!
There is no possible solution because

 is an inconsistent system.

Edwin

It's a dependent system, not an inconsistent problem. But teachers should
warn you if they're going to give such problems.

Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let a = A's age now
let f = F's age now
:
Write an equation for each statement, simplify
:
Five years ago, Ahmet was three years older than twice Fatih's age.\
a - 5 = 2(f-5) + 3
a - 5 = 2f - 10 + 3
a - 5 = 2f - 7
a = 2f - 7 + 5
a = 2f - 2
In seven years Ahmet's age will be 9 less than two times Fatih's age.
a + 7 = 2(f+7) - 9
a + 7 = 2f + 14 - 9
a + 7 = 2f + 5
a = 2f + 5 - 7
a = 2f - 2
As you can see, we got exactly the same equation for each statement.
There are numerous solutions, from F being 6 to F being 51 when A will be 100. no wonder you are having difficulty,
this is a bad problem.

How old are Ahmet and Fatih?

.

You have two solutions/answers from two tutors, that contradict one to another.

I came to take off this contradiction.

Only ONE of the two answers is correct.

The correct one is that, which states that the problem has NUMEROUS solutions.

Again: the system is CONSISTENT, but has NUMEROUS solutions: more than one.
