aaron is half as old as Ryan and three times as old as Matt. If the sum of their ages is 40. what is ryan's age?
Let Aaron's age be x
Ryans age is 2x
Matt = 1/3 x
x+2x+1/3 x =40
10x/3 =40
10x = 120
x= 12 Aaron's age
Ryan's age =2x =24
Matt's age 1/3 of 12= 4

Matt           r/(2*3)=r/6

I personally would avoid fractions by having my variable be the age of the youngest, which is Matt.

x = Matt
3x = Aaron [Aaron is 3 times as old as Matt]
6x = Ryan [Aaron is half as old as Ryan]

The sum of their ages is 40:





The ages are
Matt = x = 4
Aaron = 3x = 12
Ryan = 6x = 24
