Let x be the age of Adam (the value under the question).


Then the age of Jeff is  4x+3 years,  and


    x + (4x+3) = 63,


according to the condition.


Simplify and solve for x


    5x = 63 - 3 = 60

     x          = 60/5 = 12.


ANSWER.  Adam is 12 years old.
