The statement of the problem is meaningless....
"... in four years time (the man) will be..."
(a) "... three times AS OLD AS his son." --> the son is x; the man is 3x
(b) "... three times OLDER THAN his son." --> the son is x; the man is x+3x = 4x
(c) "... three times AS OLDER THAN his son." nonsense....
