let x = the age of mary and let y equal the age of jose.
in 8 years, mary will be 19 years old.
that means that x + 8 = 19
the current sum of the ages of mary and jose is 41.
the formula for that is x + y = 41
in the equation of x + 8 = 19, solve for x to get x = 11
x + y = 41 becomes 11 + y = 41
solve for y to get y = 41 - 11 = 30
mary is 11 years old now and jose is 30 years old now.
