i = g - 7
and george was twice as old as irene 6 years ago
g - 6 = 2(i-6)
g - 6 = 2i - 12
g = 2i - 12 + 6
g = 2i - 6
replace i with (g-7)
g = 2(g-7) - 6
g = 2g - 14 - 6
g = 2g - 20
20 = 2g - g
20 = g
find the ages of irene and george now
g = 20 is George's age
and
20 - 7 = 13 is Irene's age
