Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
m = mom's present age
s = son's
:
write an equation for each statement
:
A mother was 6 years ago four times as old as her son,
m - 6 = 4(s - 6)
m - 6 = 4s - 24
m = 4s - 24 + 6
m = 4s - 18
but now she is only three times older.
m = 3s
replace m with 3s in the 1st equation
3s = 4s - 18
3s - 4s = -18
-s = -18
s = 18 yrs is the son's age
How old are the mom and the son now?
m = 3(18)
m = 54 yrs Mom's age
