p = m - 6
seven years ago , their ages totaled 26.
(p-7) + (m-7) = 26
p + m - 14 = 26
p + m = 26 + 14
p + m = 40
replace p with m-6 from the 1st statement
(m-6) + m = 40
2m = 40 + 6
m = 46/2
m = 23 is Marci's age

Let Patty's age be P

Then Marci's is: P + 6

As their ages summed to 26, 7 years ago, their ages now sum to 40 (26 + 2 * 7)

We then get: P + P + 6 = 40

2P = 34
