Since Maria is 12 years older than Mark,

last year she was 12 years older than Mark AND twice as old as Mark     (both at the same time !)

Then it is clear that the last year Maria was 24 years old, while Mark was 12 years old at that time.

Now add 1 year to 24 and 12, and you will get the ANSWER.
