An equation is


    35 = 2.5*(5 + M).


where M is unknown Matt's age.


To get the solution, first divide both sides of this equation by 2.5:


     = 5 + M,   or

    14 = 5 + M.


Next move "5" from the right side to the left, changing the sign.


Thus you get the solution M = 14 - 5 = 9.


ANSWER.  Matt is 9 years old.
