:
let s = Sean's present age
let d = (96-s), the difference in their ages
2(s - d) = 96
simplify, divide by 2
s - d = 48
replace d with (96-s)
s-(96-s) = 48
s - 96 + s = 48
2s = 48 + 96
2s = 144
s = 144/2
s = 72 yrs is Sean's age
