When Tanya is 3 times as old as Shawn, the difference in their ages will be twice Shawn's age. Since the difference in their ages is now, and will always be, 16 years, that will happen when Shawn is 16/2 = 8; at that time Tanya will be 8*3 = 24 years old.

Tanya is now 18 and Shawn is 2; in x years Tanya will be 3 times as old as Shawn:

ANSWER: Tanya will be 18+6 = 24 when she is 3 times as old as Shawn.
