:
Two years ago Sam was two thirds of Pam's age
s - 2 = (p-2)
multiply both sides by 3
3(s-2) = 2(p-2)
distribute
3s - 6 = 2p - 4
3s - 2p = -4 + 6
3s - 2p = 2
:
in three years Sam will be three fourths of Pam's age
s + 3 = (p+3)
multiply both sides by 4
4(s+3) = 3(p+3)
4s + 12 = 3p + 9
4s - 3p = 9 - 12
4s - 3p = -3
Use elimination with these two equations. Multiply the 1st equation by 3 and the 2nd equation by 2
9s - 6p = 6
8s - 6p = -6
