"How could Angeles be in 5 years." -- makes no sense!

We know what you are really asking; but it shouldn't be our job to figure it out.

You should know how to solve problems like this using formal algebra; it is good training when you get to more complicated problems where algebra is required.

But you can get some good mental exercise by solving the problem by logical reasoning.

Here's one (quite unorthodox!) way to do that.

You are told that Angeles is 5 years younger than her husband Joseph, and that the sum of their ages is 63 years; and you are asked to find how old Angeles will be in 5 years.

So add 5 years to her age. The result will be her age in 5 years, which is what the problem is asking for.

Furthermore, since she is actually 5 years younger than her husband, adding 5 years to her age makes her the same age as him.

And when you add 5 years to her age, the sum of their ages is now 68.

But now you have the sum of two equal ages being 68; that means each one is 34.
