Let x be  "How many years ago was John's age 5 times Erin's age?"


Then 

63 - x = 5(27-x)

63 - x = 135 - 5x

5x - x = 135 - 63 = 72  ====>  4x = 72  ====>  x =  = 18.


Answer.  18 years ago.
