Write an equation for each statement
:
Chris has two children,Beth and Amy
b and a
Beth is 10 years older than Amy
b = a + 10
Chris says 'I am twice as old as the sum of Beths age and Amys age
c = 2(a+b)
Chris is 40 years old
2(a + b) = 40
divide both sides by 2
a + b = 20
How old is amy
replace b with (a+10) from the 2nd statement
a + (a+10) = 20
2a = 20 - 10
2a = 10
a = 10/2
a = 5 yrs is Amy's age

Then Beth's is: A + 10

Chris' is: 2(A + A + 10)

Chris is also 40, so we get: 2(A + A + 10) = 40
