From the condition, you have these 2 equations


S + D = 60.             (1)

S+12 =         (2)


From eq(1), express  S = 60-D  and substitute it into (2), replacing S. You will get

(60-D) + 12 = 


2*(72 - D) = D + 12


144 - 2D = D + 12


144- 12 = D + 2D  ====>  132 = 3D  ====>  D =  = 44.


Answer.  Dad is 44 years old now.  Sheril is  60-44 = 16 years old.
