b = c - 5
or
b - c = -5
next year their age will have a sum equal to 57
(b+1) + (c+1) = 57
b + c + 2 = 57
b + c = 57 - 2
b + c = 55
:
Use elimination with these two equations
b - c = -5
b + c = 55
-----------------addition eliminates c, find b
2b = 50
b = 50/2
b = 25 yrs is Beth's age
then
25 + c = 55
c = 55 - 25
c = 30 yrs is Celeste's age
