Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let p = P's age
let f = father's age
:
Write an equation for each statement
:
Peter's age is 1/3 of his father's age,
p = f
or
3p = f
In ten years time, he will be 1/2 of his father's age then,
p + 10 = (f+10)
multiply both sides by 2, get rid of the fraction
2(p+10) = f + 10
2p + 20 = f + 10
Replace f with 3p, from the 1st equation
2p + 20 = 3p + 10
20 - 10 = 3p - 2p
10 = p
P is 10 yrs old
You can find the fathers age
Check solutions in the 2nd statement
