L = Lucy's age now
L-18 = Lucy's age 18 years ago
H = Husband's age now
H-18 = Husband's age 18 years ago.

When Lucy married 18 yrs ago her husband to be was three times her age
 H-18 = 3(L-18)

and today he's twice her age,
    H = 2L
Substitute 2L for H in
 H-18 = 3(L-18)
2L-18 = 3(L-18)
2L-18 = 3L-54
   -L = -36
    L = 36

H = 2L
H = 2(36)
H = 72

how old was she when she married him?
 L-18 = Lucy's age 18 years ago (when she married)
36-18 = 18

Lucy was 18 when she married and was very foolish
