let y = Jamie's age
let z = George's

write an equation for each statement

x = 23
Jamie is 3 years less than half of George’s age.
y = z - 3
get rid of the fraction, multiply by 2
2y = z - 6
2y + 6 = z
Write and solve an equation to find George’s age.
z = 2y + 6
