9 years ago Josh was J-9, or 2C-9 years old.


The second part of the condition says

2C - 9 = 5(C-9).


2C - 9 = 5C - 45  ====>  45 - 9 = 5C - 2c  ====>  36 = 3C  ====>  C =  = 12.


Answer.  Clair is 12 years now, Josh is 24 years.
