Question 1096087: Vijay said to sangeetha when i was 1/3rd of your age you were 1/4th of my age if their combined age is 62 what is the difference between their ages
Answer by htmentor(1343) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let S = Sangeetha's current age
Let V = Vijay's current age
Then Sangeetha's current age = 62 - V
The important thing to realize is that the difference in their ages always remains the same.
Thus the difference in their ages when Vijay was 1/3 of Sangeetha's age and
Sangeetha was 1/4 of Vijay's age is the same as today.
The difference in their ages is V - S = V - (62 - V) = 2V - 62
So when Vijay was S/3 and Sangeetha was V/4, their age difference was 2V - 62
Thus we can write the following equation:
S/3 - V/4 = 2V - 62
(62 - V)/3 - V/4 = 2V - 62
To eliminate fractions, multiply through by 12:
248 - 4V - 3V = 24V - 744
Solve for V:
31V = 992
V = 32
Hence S = 30
The difference in their ages is 2 years.
Check: Vijay was 30/3 = 10 when Sangeetha was 32/4 = 8
