let jack be x and jill be y:
x = y+12
x-8 + y-8 = 48
y+12-8+y-8 = 48
2y+12-16 = 48
2y-4 = 48
2y = 52
y = 26 this is Jill's age. And Jack:
26+12 = 38

Check - 8 years ago:
26-8+38-8 = 48 Correct
